Homelessness in the LGBTQ+ Community: The Hidden Struggle

Homelessness doesn’t look the same for everyone — and for LGBTQ+ people, it often comes with unique, invisible challenges. While anyone can become homeless, LGBTQ+ individuals are disproportionately affected. In the UK and around the world, being LGBTQ+ can mean facing rejection, discrimination, and isolation — sometimes from the very people meant to offer love and safety.
Homelessness among LGBTQ+ people isn’t just about lacking shelter. It’s about lacking security, acceptance, and a safe space to simply exist.

The Reality: Key Facts
LGBTQ+ young people are significantly overrepresented in homeless populations. Some estimates suggest up to 24% of homeless youth in the UK identify as LGBTQ+. This figure, used by organizations like akt and Homeless Link, highlights a stark overrepresentation compared to the general population. theguardian.com+15homeless.org.uk+15a
Rejection from family is one of the most common reasons LGBTQ+ people become homeless.
Many face abuse or violence in temporary accommodations or on the streets.
Trans and non-binary people often face even greater barriers to accessing safe, appropriate support services.

Why LGBTQ+ People Are More at Risk
1. Family Rejection – Coming out can lead to conflict, hostility, or even the individual being kicked out of their home. For many LGBTQ+ youth, choosing to be authentic comes at the cost of stability and safety.
2. Discrimination in Services – Some homeless shelters and support services are not LGBTQ+ inclusive. This can mean misgendering, lack of understanding, or outright refusal of support especially for trans individuals.
3. Mental Health Struggles – LGBTQ+ people are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and trauma particularly if they’ve experienced bullying, abuse, or rejection. These challenges are made worse by the instability of homelessness.
4. Violence and Exploitation – On the streets, LGBTQ+ people particularly young people and trans women are at higher risk of sexual exploitation, violence, and hate crimes.
Below is a breakdown of Statics:
General LGBTQ+ Population
1 in 5 hate crimes in the U.S. (2022) was based on sexual orientation or gender identity:
17.3% sexual orientation
4.3% gender identity
Trans women of colour are among the most frequently targeted.

Trans Women & Trans Individuals
33 trans and gender non-conforming people were killed in the U.S. in 2023, mostly Black and Latinx trans women.
Cases are often underreported due to misgendering.

LGBTQ+ Youth on the Streets
LGBTQ+ youth are 20–40% of homeless youth, despite being <10% of the population.
Face 7.4× higher risk of sexual violence; many engage in survival sex.

Targeted Violence & Hate Crimes – Homeless LGBTQ+ people face frequent physical assaults, harassment, and hate crimes, often in public spaces and shelters.

In England and Wales, there were 4,780 recorded transphobic hate crimes in the year ending March 2024, with 88% of victims estimated not to report the incidents.

The Human Side: More Than a Statistic
Behind every number is a person — someone who wants to feel safe, seen, and supported. Many LGBTQ+ individuals experiencing homelessness feel invisible or unwelcome, even in spaces meant to offer help.
This isn’t just a housing issue. It’s a human rights issue.

How We Can Help
1. Support LGBTQ+ Specific or Inclusive Services – Donate to or volunteer with organisations that specifically support LGBTQ+ homeless people. A few in the UK include:
AKT (Albert Kennedy Trust) – supports LGBTQ+ young people facing homelessness
Stonewall Housing – specialist housing advice for LGBTQ+ people
LGBT Foundationprovides mental health, wellbeing and housing support
NCNW CIC – provides mental health, wellbeing and housing support, and is LGBTQ+ inclusive
2. Advocate for Change – Support policies that increase access to safe, inclusive housing. Push for better training for service providers to meet the needs of LGBTQ+ clients.
3. Create Safe Spaces – Whether at work, in your community, or at home — make space for LGBTQ+ people to be themselves. Acceptance starts with daily actions.
4. Listen and Learn – Understand the unique experiences and voices within the LGBTQ+ community — especially those of marginalised groups like Black and trans individuals.

Conclusion
LGBTQ+ people deserve more than just a place to sleep — they deserve a place where they’re safe, affirmed, and free to be themselves.
When we create systems that protect and uplift the most vulnerable, we build a better, more compassionate society for everyone.
