Helping Rebuild Lives: How to Support People Experiencing Homelessness

At NCNW, we work year-round to support individuals across a wide range of communities in rebuilding their lives away from homelessness. Our services include helping people secure stable housing, access to mental health support services and connecting people with the resources they need to thrive.
We understand that it’s not always easy to know how best to help someone experiencing homelessness. That’s why we’ve put together some guidance on creating care packages for street homeless individuals, that can truly make a difference in someone’s life.
How You Can Help
You can support someone directly by taking a moment to chat with the person experiencing homelessness. Often just taking time to acknowledge them can go a long way for their mental health. Alternatively, why not try handing over a care package.
If you choose to give directly, do what feels right for you, but always approach the situation with compassion and without assumptions. Every person’s story is different, and avoiding stereotypes is key to offering genuine, respectful help.

- General warm clothing
- Toiletries (e.g., toothbrush, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo, soap, wet wipes, deodorant, lip balm)

Winter Care Package Essentials
These items can provide much-needed comfort, dignity, and warmth, particularly in colder months:
- A winter coat

Summer Care Package Ideas
Summer brings its own set of challenges for people experiencing homelessness. Prolonged exposure to heat and sun can cause dehydration, sunburn, and even heatstroke.
Think about what you would need to stay comfortable on a hot day, that’s a great place to start:
- Bottled water or a reusable water bottle
- High-SPF suncream
- A wide-brimmed sun hat
- Sunglasses
- Lightweight, breathable clothing
- A large shawl, scarf, or wrap for sun protection
- A large umbrella for shade
- Rehydration drinks or sachets
Even small gestures can make a big impact. A thoughtful care package not only provides essential items, but it also sends a powerful message of kindness, dignity, and solidarity.
