Kim’s Story: Rebuilding Confidence After Years of Trauma

Kim came to counselling carrying a lot of emotional weight.

She had experienced years of past trauma and bullying that she had never fully addressed. In recent years, Kim also experienced multiple bereavements within her family. She found it difficult to talk about these experiences, often feeling like she would be a burden to others if she opened up.

Before starting therapy, Kim describes feeling insecure, self-critical, and overwhelmed. She felt pressure to handle everything on her own and believed she had to be perfect to be accepted. These thoughts left her feeling hopeless and disconnected from her sense of self.

Although Kim had known about NCNW’s mental health services for some time, it took courage for her to put herself forward for counselling. Pushing herself out of her comfort zone was a significant step.

Her first impression of counselling was mixed. Kim found herself questioning everything and worrying about saying the wrong thing. She felt unsure about how the process worked and struggled with overthinking. Despite this, she continued attending sessions.

A key breakthrough came when Kim discussed a difficult experience involving a friend. Through her counsellor’s support, she was able to see the situation from an outside perspective. This moment was emotional but also freeing, helping her realise she had been carrying too much alone.

Kim felt well matched with her counsellor and appreciated the approach taken. She felt reassured throughout the process and valued being able to move at her own pace. Counselling helped her develop a more positive mindset and a greater sense of self-belief.

Since starting therapy, Kim has noticed changes in many areas of her life. Her confidence has grown, her relationships have improved, and she feels more capable of handling challenges. She is particularly proud of how far she has come from the beginning, moving from self-doubt to greater self-confidence and consideration for herself and others.

Kim would recommend counselling to anyone considering it, emphasising that the decision has to come from within. Looking back, she says there is nothing she wishes she had known beforehand, as the journey unfolded in the way she needed.

Taking the first step can feel daunting, but it can lead to real change.
