Steve’s Story: Learning to Find Balance During a Difficult Time

Steve came to NCNW during a period of personal difficulty.
He was dealing with a combination of personal problems at home and the breakdown of a relationship. At the time, life felt overwhelming, and Steve found himself struggling with anxiety and nervousness about the future.
Before starting counselling, Steve admits he was sceptical. He did not know what to expect and felt unsure about whether counselling would actually help. Like many people, the idea of opening up to someone new felt unfamiliar and uncomfortable.
Steve first learned about NCNW’s mental health services through colleagues at work. Encouraged by their recommendation, he decided to give counselling a try, even though he felt uncertain.
His first impression of the counselling process was positive. Steve describes the experience as good, noting that while he didn’t know what to expect, the sessions felt natural rather than forced or intrusive. This helped him feel more at ease as the process continued.
One of the most important changes Steve experienced was a shift in perspective. Through counselling, he became more aware of his thoughts and behaviours, learning to approach situations with a more balanced mindset. He describes his counsellor as sincere, warm, humorous, and genuinely supportive.
While Steve still experiences low moods at times, counselling has helped him feel less alone. He has developed healthier ways to cope, including staying active, keeping his mind engaged, and taking care of his wellbeing.
Reflecting on his journey, Steve says counselling helped improve his mental wellbeing and gave him clarity on different aspects of his life. He would recommend NCNW to others, acknowledging that while counselling may not be the same for everyone, it can make a meaningful difference.
