Alex’s Story: Safety at the Moment It Mattered Most

Alex came to NCNW in a desperate situation. He was street homeless, exhausted, and could not see a way out. He describes being close to ending his life. This is the reality for many people when crisis reaches its peak: it is not only about housing, it is about survival.
Alex’s referral to NCNW came at the right time. His key worker at CGL referred him to Nightstop, and Alex describes it as happening exactly when he needed it most. He accessed accommodation and, for the first time in a long time, had a safe place with what he needed to get through the day.
His first impression of the accommodation was simple and honest: it was sound. It had everything he needed, and in his words, it saved him. That stability mattered immediately, because it created space for Alex to breathe, rest, and begin coming back from the edge.
But it was not only the building that made the difference. Alex is clear that the staff support was the turning point. He highlights the impact of one staff member, saying he received support that saved his life. That kind of consistency, care, and human connection is often what people remember most when they look back on a crisis, because it restores something that homelessness can strip away: the belief that you still matter.
Since being housed with NCNW, Alex describes his mindset as much better. He says he is becoming more confident. While he still experiences mental health challenges, he feels the support from the mental health team has helped him manage things more effectively. He also notes practical changes that often signal recovery: improved motivation, better routines, and feeling stronger physically.
Alex speaks with pride about how far he has come since moving in. And when asked what he would say to someone considering NCNW’s services, his answer is powerful: he would be an ambassador and tell everyone to use NCNW. He recommends the service without hesitation and says he tells anyone who will listen.
