International Youth Day: Empowering Young People Through Culture, Inclusion, Mental Health and Housing Stability

Every year on 12 August, International Youth Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the contributions, achievements, and potential of young people across the world. It is also a time to reflect on the challenges many young people continue to face and to consider how communities, organisations, and decision-makers can work together to build a fairer and more supportive society.

Young people are at the heart of our communities. Their voices, ideas, creativity, and lived experiences shape the future. To ensure they thrive, we must create environments where they feel valued, included, supported, and empowered. This means recognising the important connections between culture, equality and inclusion, mental health, and homelessness.

The Power of Culture in Young People’s Lives

Culture plays a vital role in helping young people develop a sense of identity, belonging, and purpose. Whether through music, art, sport, heritage, faith, language, or community traditions, cultural experiences help shape who we are and how we connect with others.

For many young people, engaging in cultural activities provides a positive outlet for self-expression and creativity. It helps build confidence, strengthens social connections, and creates opportunities to celebrate diverse backgrounds and experiences.

When young people see their cultures represented and respected, they are more likely to feel included and valued within their communities. Equally important is giving young people opportunities to learn about different cultures, helping to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and promote mutual understanding.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: Ensuring Every Voice Is Heard

International Youth Day reminds us that every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion, or socioeconomic circumstances.

Despite progress, many young people continue to face inequality and discrimination that can limit their opportunities and affect their wellbeing. Creating inclusive communities means actively listening to young people and ensuring they have a voice in decisions that affect their lives.

Schools, workplaces, community organisations, and public services all have a role to play in promoting equality. By creating safe and inclusive spaces where young people feel accepted and respected, we can help them develop confidence, resilience, and a stronger sense of belonging.

Inclusion is not simply about representation; it is about ensuring that every young person feels they matter and can contribute meaningfully to their community.

Supporting Youth Mental Health

Mental health is one of the most significant issues affecting young people today. Adolescence and early adulthood can bring a range of pressures, including education, employment, social relationships, family circumstances, financial concerns, and uncertainty about the future.

Poor mental health can affect anyone, regardless of background. Feelings of anxiety, loneliness, low mood, or stress can impact a young person’s ability to engage in education, maintain relationships, and achieve their goals.

Early intervention and supportive environments are essential. Open conversations about mental health help reduce stigma and encourage young people to seek support when they need it. Schools, youth services, families, and communities can all contribute by promoting positive wellbeing, resilience, and emotional literacy.

Simple actions can make a significant difference:

  • Encouraging open and honest conversations
  • Promoting healthy lifestyles and physical activity
  • Providing access to mental health support services
  • Creating opportunities for peer support
  • Building safe and supportive community spaces

By prioritising mental health, we help young people build the confidence and resilience needed to navigate life’s challenges.

The Link Between Homelessness and Mental Wellbeing

One of the most pressing challenges facing some young people is homelessness. Losing access to safe and stable housing can have a profound impact on every aspect of a young person’s life, including their education, employment prospects, physical health, and mental wellbeing.

Young people experiencing homelessness often face multiple barriers, including family breakdown, poverty, trauma, unemployment, and social exclusion. The uncertainty and stress of unstable housing can contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, isolation, and hopelessness.

At the same time, poor mental health can increase vulnerability to housing difficulties, creating a cycle that can be difficult to break without appropriate support.

Addressing youth homelessness requires a joined-up approach that focuses on prevention, early intervention, and accessible support services. Safe accommodation, mental health support, education, employment opportunities, and strong community networks are all essential in helping young people build positive futures.

Building Stronger Communities for Young People

Culture, equality, mental health, and housing are deeply connected. When young people feel included, respected, and supported, they are more likely to experience positive mental wellbeing and achieve their potential.

This International Youth Day, we can all play a part by:

  • Listening to and amplifying young people’s voices
  • Challenging discrimination and promoting inclusion
  • Supporting youth mental health initiatives
  • Raising awareness of youth homelessness
  • Creating opportunities for participation and leadership
  • Celebrating the diverse cultures and experiences that enrich our communities

Looking Forward

International Youth Day is more than a celebration; it is a call to action. It reminds us that investing in young people means investing in the future of our communities.

By promoting cultural understanding, championing equality and inclusion, supporting mental wellbeing, and addressing homelessness, we can help create a society where every young person has the opportunity to feel safe, valued, connected, and hopeful about the future.

Together, we can ensure that no young person is left behind and that every young person has the chance to thrive.
